THE TWO THIRDS GENDER PRINCIPLE

Only  48hrs to the long awaited general elections.Kenyans, now more than want to exercise their constitutional right by voting in leaders of their choice. Many Kenyans have pledged to maintain peace whatever the outcome of the elections will be.
The electoral commission has great plans to ensure everything goes well on Monday 4th March. The internal security ministry is also at par in ensuring security is maintained through out the the exercise. The judiciary, through the chief justice has also chosen lawyers and judges who will handle any arising issues concerning the elections. That is a clear indication that Kenya is surely ready.

However, the 2/3 principle shouldn’t  be overlooked.Women organisations everywhere are asking Kenyans to vote in women leaders just to meet this rule.It should also be known that this rule includes the appointive posts too.

Article 177 (1) (b) on countyassembly representation gives the formula to ensure there is no more than 2/3rs of one gender. It says there shall be nominations of members, as special seats based on political party strengths, to ensure this principle is upheld.

It is also upon parliament to ensure this principle is met as per the time stated in the constitution.

VOTE WISELY AND PEACEFULLY.
